Shortly after 9/11, the New York office of the company where I used to work got an enormous card from our Boston office. Among other things, it read: "Today, we are all Yankees fans."
It didn't last, of course. Red Sox fans are an example of hope triumphing over experience, with a little bit of masochism thrown in.
It may even be that Red Sox fandom loses some of its meaning if the team takes to winning. It took a certain measure of devotion to love the Red Sox and hate the Yankees so much. That devotion will remain untested if things get better.
New Yorkers didn't let their city become Mudville over this. Privately, some of them didn't even begrudge Boston this victory. The Yankees will have many more great seasons, and Steinbrenner needs the occasional reminder.

You are absolutely right. The Sox deserve to win ONE! New York will get over it.
