It was one of those news items that didn't quite make sense but catered perfectly to antisemitic conspiracy theories: a Pentagon official was supposed to have passed secret information on to Israel through AIPAC. People wondered aloud whether this "spy" had influenced US policy in the Middle East.
For most European news organizations, it's a foregone conclusion that there is no legitimate basis for the US support of Israel. Whether it's the Jewish lobby or high-ranking administration individuals who just happen to be Jewish, Israel is benefiting from US policy at the expense of everything else.
This story has yet to fully unfold, but the facts so far don't exactly point to an Israeli espionage operation - the alleged spy was far from high-ranking, AIPAC categorically and credibly denies any involvement, and US officials are downplaying the whole affair.
We'll see.
