New York tabloids have pasted Mr. Mayor Rudy all over their front page, telling about his tirade against the 9/11 commission over their tendency to blame others for 9/11.
He has a point. It's easy to get caught up in the things we imagine we could have prevented (suspicious men with tourist visas from learning how to fly) and lose a sense of clarity of who actually did what. And I for one am tired of the spreading belief that Arabs can't help but be terrorists.
Having said this, there's nothin wrong with asking what could have been done to stop this, and what could have been done to minimize the damage. I haven't heard anyone question the courahe of New York's finest and bravest (ot the PA cops), but it would have been nice if fewer of them had perished.
Perhaps the commission wasn't clear about the premises for their questions, or perhaps it's simply too hard for Rudy to see anything less than perfection in the brave souls in uniform. But the New York tabloid press loves a confrontation too much to let this go. And I have a feeling that both Rudy and the commission end up being misunderstood.
