Martin Peretz is obviously pissed off. He had misgivings about what Kerry would mean for Israel before the election. Now he's pissed off at Kerry for everything, and also at the Democratic establishment for their elitist ways. And he's chosen the op-ed pages of the Wall Street Journal to vent his spleen. Is this another Zell Miller?
Maybe. Peretz talks about the Democrats as "they," and there's none of the sadness you find among other writers who are dismayed about the election results. And all the bellyaching about elitism has a point, but it hardly explains why so many Americans overlooked Bush's many flaws and mistakes.
So it could be that Peretz is spanking the Democrats in public for their own good, or that he's about to give up liberalism and bring his way of thinking to the other side of the aisle.
I think that one of the things that bugs Peretz is the Democratic unwillingness to see issues from a moral perspective. It's chic on the left wing to be apologists for radicalism, especially if it opposes "colonialism," "imperialism," or (if you're European or Noam Chomsky), "Zionism." Bush at least called terrorism for what it is.
